A qualified accountant, Peter Gordon is retired from the railway having served in many posts for British Rail, Chiltern Railways and AEA Technology Rail / DeltaRail where he provided consultancy in many areas such as timetabling, passenger loading and advising on franchising bids. He is still very active serving as treasurer of the London Region and Railway Forum, chairing the Transport Statistics Users Group and editing the Transport Economist magazine. He is also a trustee and treasurer of the Voice of the Listener and Viewer which is a registered charity.
I joined the RAF straight from school at 16 and served as an Airframe Fitter in Transport command. Served in Singapore & Malaya and on return served in Maintenance Command until joining BOAC in 1971. Began studying for City & Guilds qualifications at Southall College and on completion started studying at the Open University. Obtained a BA Degree and then started studying for the Chartered Institute of Transport exams. Continued studying and gained a Post Graduate diploma from Brunel University then a MSc. from University of Surrey. Joined the committee of the Heathrow Branch of the CIT in 1979 and on the amalgamation of the CIT with the ILT became a member of the new London Region Committee before eventually becoming the chairman.
I am a member of the London Region Committee and represent the London Region on the following Committees;-
Public Policies Committee (PPC), Regional Advisory Group (RAG), Aviation Policy Group (APG) and Strategic Rail Policy Group (SRPG).
I recently retired (after 43years) with British Airways having served in Supervisory and Management roles in Flight Operations, Ground Transportation and Passenger Services. My last role was as a Sales/Ticketing and Reservations specialist which often involved complex re-routing of passengers requiring an extensive knowledge of Passports, Visas and Immigration requirements for entry and/or transit to their final destinations.
I now use my expertise to assist people as a Transport & Travel Consultant.
I am also a Parish Councillor at Stokenchurch and have responsibilities for the village Allotments, as well as being a representative on various Local and County organizations necessary for the Councils proper function.
I am also involved in vehicle restoration in that I am part owner of both a London Bus and a Rover Metro.
My life in transport started as an academic Operational Researcher working on computerised vehicle scheduling and using classical transport planning models on consultancy assignments with a very young PTRC. However the majority of my career was with Passenger Transport Executives and Authorities, first in Greater Glasgow (later Strathclyde) PTE and then in West Yorkshire, better known as Metro. My route to CILT qualification was unusual. As a student member in Glasgow in the 1970s, I was asked to take over teaching the management course for the then CIT qualification, and became MCIT on the basis of good performance by my students! I was made a Fellow in 1979 for my work on Transport and the Disadvantaged for Strathclyde Regional Council – this was an early example of social and market research in a field we now know as Accessibility and Inclusion. I have served the Institute as a Committee Member in the Scottish, North and West Yorkshire Groups (one year as Chairman). I am currently a Director and Trustee of CILT as well as a Committee Member of the London Region and the Gatwick Group. For several decades I have championed the Bus Industry within CILT and am a member of the Public Policies Committee, the recently formed Bus and Coach Policy Group and the Bus and Coach Forum Committee.
